SMS-oncology’s mission is bringing innovative cancer therapies to the patient by connecting science and practice
Since the 1980s, many anti-cancer agents have entered clinical trials. Unfortunately, most of these agents have failed at various stages of development. In many occasions, unacceptable toxicity was already detected in preclinical studies or early clinical trials. Many others failed in pivotal clinical study stages (phase III) due to lack of efficacy on hard clinical endpoints, or because the drug’s toxicity appeared too difficult to manage in a larger patient population. With the emergence of so-called targeted anticancer agents in the clinical development arena, pharmaceutical, biotech companies and clinicians are forced to reconsider their way to anticancer drug development. For example, targeted agents have initiated a re-evaluation of the oncology drug development process.
The chances to build future commercial potential are most present in the early phases of clinical research.
